Disaster Movie (2008) trailer

The title says it all. The story wants to make fun of recent Hollywood films. I will not bother to see the movie. Watching “Meet the Spartans” was a torture and I stopped after 20 minutes.

It seems Kim Kardashian, Carmen Electra and Vanessa Minnillo cannot find a descent job these days.

The Bank Job (2008)

Jason Statham, Saffron Burrows and many many more

This film is based on a true story. Government officials need to get their hands on some frisky photos hidden in a bank vault without exposing their involvement to the situation. Therefore they arrange for some …opportunists to grab the chance and do the dirty work for them without them knowing. The job is successful, but things get really complicated afterward.

I liked watching this movie since you never knew how things would turn out and not all protagonists are bulletproof.

The only minus to the film is that there are a lot of characters to remember, but they were part of the story so we forgive you.

The Ruins (2008)

Four young Americans, a German and a Greek decide to visit some uncharted pyramid in Mexico. Unfortunately they are trapped there, because once they set their foot on it the locals won’t let them leave in fear they will spread a deadly vine with personality to the jungle.

I was hoping to see a monster emerge from the ruins and not some plant who has a taste for human flesh. What is more they never get more than two rooms inside so we never really feel the agony of them lurking in the dark passages, because they will get their flesh torn and chewed. We just see them sitting on top nagging for their fate and waiting to die.

The Greek guy was the first to die. Very obvious since he only spoke Greek and only Greeks outside Greece speak Greek so why keep someone alive you don’t understand what he is saying. But he had a quick death. The German on the other hand suffered the most and I can only assume the film-makers really hate Germans. I won’t say what happened to him, but according to what I saw becoming a fertilizer for a human-eater vine wouldn’t sound such a bad idea at that time.

This is a really good made trailer.

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008)

There are some movies that producers should never bother with, but people always make mistakes.

The first movie was very entertaining and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of my favorite actors (without saying he is the best), but the second which is the prequel is really really bad. I had more fun painting my toenails while watching it.

Never heard of any of the actors except faintly for Randy Couture who is a wrestler and he gets a pretty ugly tattoo on his head at the end of the film. The only good thing is a Chinese guy who it seems at the start that the writers wanted him getting killed but then they decided to give him a larger part and forgot to make the corrections.

Here is the trailer who was made by people who did not pay attention to the story.

P.S. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kelly Hu have nothing to do with this film.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)

Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh

An evil Chinese emperor wants to rule the world and seeks immortality, but he is cursed along with his army and now he is awake and wants revenge.

The third of a series of movies that started well, but like most of films that had success the second sequel is nothing like the previous ones. It is obvious that the producers where counting on the success of Mummy 1 and 2 and they didn’t even bother to make a descent scenario. It was just plain action and nothing more. We are ok with action when we know that we are going to see only blood spilling everywhere, but when we know that you can do something better then we expect to see something better. Rachel Weisz must have read the script before she refused to repeat the part of Evelyn.

Maria Bello was not persuasive at all trying to maintain an English accent. Fraser must hate his life for being in it. The romance between Alex and Lin was not remotely touching and I was trying hard to find a really good joke in the whole movie. You can also see yetis and from their moves and actions I can guess they watch a lot of TV.

Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are always good, because they always kick ass with style so they need nothing more to prove.

Australia (2008) trailer

I do not really know exactly what is the story about. Only thing I know is that it is love story at the beginning of WW2. Also it is about Australia, made by an Australian director and Australian actors so who knows better their country but them.

I don’t like love stories, especially in an era that makes them tragic, because they make me sad if they don’t make me bored. If there is a love story that finishes with a happy ending then it is usually a comedy. If it does not end happily or with someone getting killed then it is not worth made into a movie.

Hugh Jackman is almost the perfect guy, because he is hairy and masculine and is a great performer too, but unfortunately he is married with children and I am not that kind of person.

I have the impression that Kidman sometimes tries too hard to look fragile and sensual that I do not feel anything fragile and sensual from her. She was great in Moulin Rouge, but I think she would be perfect if she didn’t try that hard.

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

Freddie Highmore, David Strathairn, Nick Nolte

This is a child-movie so I am not the best person to form an opinion for it since I am not a kid anymore.

A family which includes a mother, twin brothers and a sister move to house in the country. One of the boys discovers a book that reveals that there is more to this world than we know, like fairies, goblins and other mythical creatures. The book contains knowledge of this world that if it falls in the hands of the evil Mulgarath (Nick Nolte) it will grant him great power and will make him even more powerful. He discovers that the book is still in the house and tries to get it.

Nick Nolte has a 3 minute physical presence, but like always he is a great actor no matter what he does. Freddie Highmore is still very young, but he has great potential as an actor if he chooses to continue acting when he grows up.

I have to admit that I had a great time watching this movie, but I also have to admit that I prefer movies with more intense violence and partially nudity than this. If you have kids probably they will love it.

Species (1995)

Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen, Alferd Molina, Forest Whitaker, Marg Helgenberger, Natasha Henstridge

Nice cast.

Scientists are experimenting with human and alien DNA without thinking that there are consequences to stupidity and they create a beautiful woman. Eventually she escapes and she starts to search a male for reproduction, but she has to escape being caught again.

The movie is not for an Oscar, but it is funny. It has lots of violence and nudity from Henstridge particularly. Kingsley is the scientist who is to blame for everything, Madsen is the man with the gun and Whitaker is an empath who feels what Henstrisge felt few hours back but never in the present.

There are few more sequels that I havent’t seen yet and heard some unflattering things about, but this is not my opinion… yet.

Body of Lies trailer (2008)

It has been long since Crowe has made something that I can remember and I hope this is it, because I know he is a good actor even though I heard the worst about his personality.

Leonardo DiCaprio always has excellent choices for his career only he has to act a little less, because I feel sometimes that he presses himself so much that his head will explode.

Max Payne trailer (2008)

This film is based on a game. The problem with these kind of games is that they have a lot of shooting and little plot so there is not much to base on. Take for example Hitman which is a great game, but the movie sucks. The producers really have to thank God that there are choreographers and visual effects to add something decent to them.
