Gamer (2009)

gamer-poster

Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta, Michael C. Hall, Kyra Sedgwick

In the near future people can control other people in multiplayer online environments. One of those environments has teenagers controlling convicts in deadly battles. The criminal with 30 fights under his belt is set free.

Let me think! Controlling other people equals slavery. Making them having sex while you are watching equals pornography and prostitution. Making them kill other people equals murder. What a world to live in. Where are human rights and ideals in this world?

Hiring people to be controlled in those environments means too many salaries. Making them having sex uncontrollably means STDs. Having too many people being killed? Less workforce. Have you ever though of 3D models? They are cheap, they are customizable, they never get old, they have no needs, no salary and they never die unless you erase them.

Other than that “Gamer” is one of the movies that has all the potential to be one of the good ones, but something you cannot figure out is holding it back.I cannot explain what has gone wrong, because I like the actors, it has some nice combat scenes, Michael C. Hall is wonderful, but overall I did not like it. Just wait for the DVD to come out if you haven’ t seen it already.

Fast & Furious (2009)

fastfurious4poster

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez

Dom Toretto is a refugee and returns to avenge the murder of his girlfriend. He will work with Brian O’ Connor who is an FBI agent to bring down a drug baron. For that purpose they will do what they do best, drive unsafely fast and brake few rules.

This is the fourth of the movie series. The problems with that is that usually when the first movie is 100%, the second is 50%, the third is 25% and so on. Here, the first was a great movie, the second was rubbish, the third was entertaining with an annoying protagonist and the fourth is as good as the first. In the film industry everything is possible.

Michelle Rodriguez is advertised like she has a really big part, but she dies the first 10 minutes. It was surprisingly funny.

Other than that there was a lot of action, a lot of adrenalin, a lot of beautiful women and a lot of nice cars.

Dragonquest (2009)

dragonquest_large

A young hero will arise to save the world… again.

What a movie. Such fresh ideas that we’ve never seen before.

A young man who happens to be the chosen one finds the truth, but he really is not ready for such a quest, because nobody wanted to tell him the truth and prepare him. Then he will have to complete a series of quests in order to find some jewels that will complete a pendant that has the power to awaken a dragon that can defeat a dead guy. This is a one man job, because everybody expects him to do the whole thing while the rest sits and waits.

These quests are not that difficult. I can be the chosen one. Everyone can break out of a prison with one guard. Everyone has given a penny to a poor guy. Everyone will freeze at the site of a huge spider. And the hero did not go to the bathtub with that girl, because we all know that a hero never has sex before marriage. Yes, he will defeat the bad guy with his virtue. Hail, to the virgins of the world for they hold our salvation.

The actrors performances are so breathtaking that I can only compare to a porn movie star before the sex scene and the battles are so epic that I can only compare to Worf’s agility in Star Trek.

Watch at you own risk.

Cannot even find a trailer for this one. Cannot find a good poster. It seems the producers didn’t even bother.

Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)

confessions_of_a_shopaholic_movie_poster11

Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Joan Cusack, John Goodman, John Lithgow, Kristin Scott Thomas

Long Story Short: A beautiful young woman suffering form a compulsive shopping disorder with a huge dept finds a new job and love. That pretty much is the whole story from beginning to the end. Not that I spoil anything here, but everyone can figure out the end. Its the same story every single time when it comes to romantic comedies.

Analysis: A beautiful young woman is hired by a guy, because he likes her ideas, but we all know he is sexually attracted to her. She appears at the job interview telling all the wrong stuff a person shouldn’t say, but the other candidates were guys and a woman in a suit. Then, the first day at the office he realizes she is completely clueless, but instead of firing her he takes her to a party with business associates and future customers and she says all the stupid things a person can say, but since it is movie everybody loves her. In the real world nobody likes to be criticized or slapped. What happens next is a sh…ty situation when she loses everything, but since we said again this is a movie everything works fine in the end.

You might say that I said the whole movie, but I’m trying to save you 90 minutes of your lives. You really don’ t want to see a woman screaming and being stupid and trying to persuade you that she became a shopaholic, because she has issues when the other girls had shinier shoes and clothes when she was a child. This called jealousy that leads to materialism.

Watchmen (2009)

watchmen-poster

Malin Akerman, Malin Akerman, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino

The time is 1985 and people are afraid of a nuclear holocaust. The superheroes are banned from their duties at these difficult times, but the death of one of their own reunites them in pursuit of the awful truth.

The movie almost 3 hours long and the problem with that is that at some point you have to visit the… washroom.Besides this I do not see any other problem with the movie. The time past so fast that I didn’t realize it.

I had an excellent time during this movie. The superheroes are just ordinary people with super-karate skills, super-strength and a super-imaginative costume and gadget designer. They are not about saving the world, because mama likes it that way. It is about having a good time while saving the world. They smoke, they swear, they hate and they are having sex. The exception is Dr. Manhattan who does not have feelings anymore so he saves the world because he remembers it is a good thing.

The cast is almost people I almost never heard before with the exception of Carla Gugino who I always find juicy beautiful, but they fit like glove in their parts.

There is nudity to the point that some will find it very informative – Yeah, Dr. Manhattan is the new sex symbol – so I would recommend parents not to allow their children to watch it until the age of 18. Of course they already know about that stuff and there is nothing you can do, but whatever.

Seven Pounds (2008)

seven-pounds

Will Smith, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, Michael Ealy, Barry Pepper

A man who was responsible of a fatal car accident seeks redemption by saving the lives of seven people.

Totally predictable. You know the obvious from the first ten minutes of the movie. The story is 5 minutes of each person in distress which is a total of 30 minutes of the movie and the rest is the fresh blossomed love story of Will Smith and Rosario Dawson who suffers from a heart condition. Ok, if I say more you will get the end if you haven’t figured it out yet.

The way the story ends is quite impressive, but totally stupid. Perhaps this is why it is impressive.

Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)

resident_evil__degeneration_by_jevangood

This movie is about zombies, which I really hate seeing, but this movie rocks. It rocks so much that they were really tolerable to see. The Japanese vision of how a movie should be based on a video game is so much better than the American. Max Payne and Hitman are completely trash in front of this. Also the producers of the Resident Evil movies should be ashamed of themselves. All the movies suck and if it wasn’ t for Milla Jovovich noone would bother to see it. There is always something happening during this movie and you never get bored.

OK, there are no actual people here and the 3D makes it a little strange, but I have some respect for that, because this is not an easy task. Making a movie completely in 3D is like having a baby. It starts with a cell that multiplies and becomes a human. With movies it starts with a simple box and becomes the movies you see. It’s  like a miracle.

The movie poster is a little incomplete and it needs more work. Watch it guys!

Traitor (2008)

traitor-poster-full

Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Saïd Taghmaoui, Neal McDonough, Archie Panjabi, Jeff Daniels

Two FBI agents (Guy Pearce, Neal McDonough) are investigating a terrorist group. Their prime suspect is an ex-military American Muslim (Don Cheadle) who in reality is undercover.

The story is dealing with friendship, faith in ones religion, how people interpret their faith and sucrifices we made for our beliefs. The traitor in this film is not the ex-military who betrayed his country and fled to the terrorist group, but all of those who betray their beliefs in order to pursue their goals no matter what and who gets hurt. A traitor to one is the friend to the other. So in the end it doesn’t matter what others believe about you, but what you believe of yourself.

I give this movie top marks and I encourage you to see it.

P.S. Steve Martin is the co-writer of this film and it was surprising to learn that, because we are so used to see him in comedies where he has various accidents and misfortunes that are supposed to be funny.

Eagle Eye (2008)

Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Michael Chiklis, Billy Bob Thornton

Jerry and Rachel, two strangers receive a phone call and a voice instructs them to do a series of errands that includes breaking the law and risk their lives. The peculiar thing about this voice is that she knows their every move.

Shia LaBeouf, has made an excellent variety of choices the last couple of years that sky-rocketed his career. The annoying thing about it is that every guy who gains fame is instantly promoted to a sex symbol. Like we don’t know who is sexy or not. I am not saying that Shia is ugly, but he is definately not a sex symbol.

Now about the film. It is a much better version of “War Games” with lots of chasing and mystery and it had a really good cast.

These critics are so boring when you don’t have something bad to say.

Now this trailer is making you think that the whole movie is about LaBeouf when it is about a guy and a woman. See how manipulating advertising can be?

Burn After Reading (2008)

George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, David Rasche, J.K. Simmons

Employers at a gym find a CD that contains some secret CIA data and want to take advantage of it.

The good thing about the brothers Coen is that they make films that everything can happen so you can never know what to expect. Also every single actor fits for their part like a hand in a glove.

You should definately see the film.
